As a “HeartKid” himself, Con Dedes knows all about what it means for families to go through the challenges of having a child with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). The immense pressures that are put on parents and families are second only to the battle that the children with CHD go through themselves.
The purpose of HeartKids is to assist in the lifetime journey of the 64,000 children, teens, and adults affected by CHD throughout Australia, and our goal here is to not only spread the message about CHD, but also to help raise funds for this incredible organisation.
So, what is CHD? Essentially, it is when a child is born with a malformation of the heart, aorta, or other large blood vessels.
Let’s look at some of the simple facts about CHD:
- In Australia, eight babies are born with a heart condition every day.
- Congenital Heart Disease is the most common birth abnormality, affecting 1 in every 100 babies.
- HeartKids provides life-long support for heart kids and their families.
- Over 32,000 adults have lived with a heart condition since childhood, thanks to medical advances.
- There is no known cure.
The most frustrating of the above facts is that there is no known cure, which means it comes down to the support that can be given.
Very sadly, the name ‘Heart Angels’ is given to the children or young people who have died from CHD and associated conditions. It is the role of HeartKids, who have been doing this for over 35 years now, to work with the families who have tragically experienced the loss of a young person in their lives due to CHD. Heartbreakingly, four children or young people pass away each week and it is imperative the families know there is a large community of caring people there to support them. Grief is a difficult thing to deal with and people deal with it in their own ways, and this is where the support of HeartKids is so essential - helping and guiding people along this path in the days, months, and years that follow. Our mission is to ensure they can continue to do this essential work in our communities.
HeartKids is based on four pillars:
Advocacy – advocate for the needs of people with congenital/childhood heart disease, their families and carers.
Information – provide quality information to guide families on their whole life journey.
Research – drive world class research into the causes, treatment and management of congenital/childhood heart disease.
Support – deliver high quality support services via all major Australian Children’s hospitals and in the community.
It is these four pillars that are the driving force behind HeartKids, ensuring that the young people suffering from CHD and their families receive all the help they can. They also act as a list of things in which all those involved with HeartKids strive to continue the growth and development of.
Will you help us?
The Dedes Group have long been supporters of HeartKids and Con Dedes himself is an Ambassador for the organisation.
As HeartKids relies solely on the donations of everyday Australians, the Dedes Group want to raise as many funds as possible for this incredible life-saving and life-giving organisation and would like your help in achieving this.
We are fortunate to have some of the top restaurants Sydney has to offer so we would like to utilise this position with this: throughout the rest of August, the Dedes Group will make a donation to HeartKids for every dessert purchased at any of these, some of our best restaurants Sydney side; Flying Fish / Watergrill / Deckhouse / Flying Fish & Chips / The Italian Kitchen Miranda.
